The new town covers quite a large area in the centre of the city. It is to the north of Holyrood and the old town. Near to many of the attractions including the Royal Mile and Princes Street. Built to a plan by one James Craig, Edinburgh's New Town was built between the years of 1776 and 1840. The contrast to the old town are plain to see with uniform streets running mostly at right angles to each other. The idea here was to get Edinburgh to grow outward as upposed to the rather seemingly unplanned chaotic way the old had expanded.
