In the Merchiston district, which is only walking distance from the centre of Edinburgh, we offer a quieter more residential area than most of the larger establishments.

At the Ettrick we have tried to keep our hotel a part of the community in the city. Our bar does get a few friendly local people in so you can feel a part of life here when you stay with us. If you fancy stopping for a relaxing meal we can offer you some room outside to eat, if you so desire, during the summer months. The menu at the Bistro is available all day for your pleasure.

We have a private car park available for our staying guests.

Good stuff: good bed, quiet room, good food

Bad stuff: decor was very poor

Overall: no tea making facilities available until well into second day after reminding staff, that there was no kettle in the room

Good stuff: The Bed and Breakfast enviroment. Friendly and warm.

Overall: We had a pleasant stay. We enjoyed the breakfast they served every morning. We loved the character of the older hotel building. Sometimes you just dont experience that in a chain hotel.

Good stuff: the dining facilities were very good

Bad stuff: no natural light - i was put in a room for disable guests and the shower facilities were poor

Good stuff: We were upgraded and had a lovely big room. The hotel itself was handy for transport and had lovely surroundings.

Bad stuff: The service of the staff was somewhat understated! Poor attention to detail...

Overall: While we were there, we ran out of... Toilet paper (the half roll we had on arrival had been dropped in something) Tea bags (they weren't replaced - the biscuits were though!) Shower Gel When we requested some from the staff, at no point did anyone apologise or seem to care. Breakfast one morning - we had to wait 20 minutes to even be acknowledged and then a further wait for food. All in all the staff seemed to be rather underwhelmed... At times it felt like we were being an inconvenience to them. The hotel was also noisy, but what do you expect when booking 2 weeks before Christmas! Having said all that, we had a lovely stay in Edinburgh and would definitely return.

Bad stuff: Tatty decor in Room... No remote working on TV. Big water leak in Hotel entrance

Overall: Not what we expected when looking at hotel on Internet site. The room was tatty, with fixtures and fittings coming away from the walls. Not a £50 a night hotel in our opinion.

Good stuff: A good clean hotel with very pleasent and helpful staff

Bad stuff: Beds a little to hard, and lack of parking space for guests

Overall: No compliants in general except for parking, rooms good, food good and staff very helpful indeed and would stay again when in Edinburgh. Regards
